Wireless Emergency Alert Capable Devices
WEA is a public safety system that allows customers who own certain wireless phones and other compatible mobile devices to receive geographically-targeted, text-like messages alerting them of imminent threats to safety in their area.
Appalachian Wireless transmits wireless emergency alerts throughout its entire geographic service area, but not all devices are equipped to receive wireless emergency alerts. The devices listed below are WEA-capable, meaning that they are capable of receiving wireless emergency alerts. Some devices may require that you download software updates or change the controls in your settings to receive alerts. If you have questions, please consult your user manual, or you may contact a sales associate who will attempt to assist you.
Below is a listing of the devices that we carry, and the WEA version that they include. The definitions below are the differences between each WEA version.
- WEA 1.0 – Allows for a maximum of 90 characters of text only messages which includes text web addresses and phone numbers.
- WEA 2.0 – Allows for a maximum of 360 characters. Spanish-language messages, public safety messages, alert message prioritization and consumer opt-in for receiving state/local test messages are also supported. WEA 2.0 supports all alert types, plus state or local test messages initiated by state and local emergency managers to test the WEA system to members of the public. Also includes WEA 1.0.
- WEA 3.0 – Offers enhanced geographic targeting to notify people directly impacted by emergencies. To benefit from this geo-targeting of specific areas, you must have location services on your device's settings. You will only get messages if you are in an affected area involved in the emergency from the alert origination. Also includes WEA 1.0 and 2.0.
